Wellness: A concept analysis

Abstract
Purpose : This study was conducted to identify the properties of the concept of wellness within the context and obtain theoretical evidences.

Methods : Walker and Avant s concept analysis process was utilized. Computer and manual searches were conducted with articles addressing wellness from 2005 to 2014. PubMed, NDSL, and RISS were the electronic databases used to access literature for this study. An inductive analysis of articles produced descriptive themes.

Results : The attributes of wellness were identified as 1) dynamics and continuity towards desirable lifestyle, 2) physical functionality, 3) intimacy, 4) future-oriented pioneership, and 5) holistic integrity. Antecedents of wellness were described as attention for meaning of life and its application toward contentinent and well-being, attention for general health status, desire to change lifestyle and behaviors for better life. Consequences of wellness were described as improvement of the quality of life and maximization of personal potential.

Conclusion : The results of this concept analysis will be of help for understanding of the concept of wellness and provide theoretical basis for use of the concept in nursing practice.
